ABSTRACT

This paper examines the stability in expectation mismatches in relation to promotion, variety and autonomy goals in a group of young people in their first full time job. The sample is made up with 366 new employees. They had been working between 6 and 9 months at the time of the first interview. A year later 261 workers remained in the same company, whereas 75 had moved to work for a different company. Results show that first job experiences are more positive than expected as far as autonomy and variety are concerned; and less positive with regards to promotion goals. Goals do not change adjustment levels with time. Changing of company is related to negative expectation mismatches in promotion. Discussion suggests the importance of anticipatory socialisation in expectation mismatches as well as the adaptation role which the new company exerts on the new employee.
