ABSTRACT

Shyness is relevant due to its similarities with social phobia disorder. In this sense, should be noted that many social phobics do not seek professional psychological advice due to their ignorance or due to them considering that their extreme shyness does not contitute a symptom of a pathology requiring specialized treatment. This review paper attempts to establish the similarities and differences between shyness and social phobia; to that end, shyness is differenciated from introversion, and behavioral inhibition, such concepts having been frequently mingled in scientific literature. This review lead us to conclude that, while shyness and social phobia share several characteristics, their differences in relation to epidemiology, onset, curse, threatening and avoiding situations, and degree of heritage, do not allow to consider them as identical.
